I first heard of Paul McCartney because of Denise Morgan. Our family first moved to Savannah in the summer of 1968, when I was 6 years old. My father, a newly minted U.S. Army surgeon, was assigned to Tuttle Hospital at Hunter. We rented a modest brick ranch-style house on Sharondale Road in Windsor Forest — and it was there that I first met Denise, who lived next door.Denise Morgan was a couple of years older than me. With a houseful of older siblings, Denise was far more culturally aware than I was. She was also obsessed with the Beatles — so obsessed, in fact, that she had made puppets of each of them, complete with long hair and beards.“This one’s John. He’s married to Yoko,” she said, waving about a puppet with little round glasses drawn on his face. “This one’s Ringo. He’s the drummer. Nobody likes him. George plays guitar. He’s OK. But my favorite is Paul. He’s the coolest.”
