John Lennon wanted to be a writer, according to Paul McCartney. In a similar vein, Paul claimed that while writing The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever,” John drew inspiration from a famous poem, and that the poem influenced another Beatles song.

“John had done a little poem that [his aunt] had framed in the kitchen,” Paul recalled in his 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now. “‘A house where there is love…’ John had aspirations to be a writer.”

John’s first collection of short stories was discussed by Paul. “At first, he was writing In His Own Write,” Paul explained. “He’d show me what he’d been typing,” I explained. I’d occasionally lend a hand to him. ‘In the early owls of the Morecambe,’ I recall, ‘a cup o-teeth’ was one section in the typewriter when I was around there. But I’d like everything, and I was blown away.”
