Rubber Soul Reborn: The New Mix Is a Revelation
Relix published a substantial new assessment today of the expanded Rubber Soul Special Edition. Reviewer Jeff Tamarkin is particularly enthusiastic about the new Giles Martin/Sam Okell stereo treatment, describing the increased clarity and presence as revelatory while also highlighting the archival material that lets listeners hear the Beatles constructing the record in the studio. The deluxe configuration contains the new stereo mix, original mono master, original 12-track U.S. Capitol edition and 26 session/demo recordings, 22 of them previously unreleased. Among the archival material are multiple early takes of “Norwegian Wood” and “I’m Looking Through You,” working versions of “Day Tripper” and “We Can Work It Out,” a “Michelle” rehearsal, and “In My Life” with an abandoned organ solo.
