Paul McCartney & Bruce Springsteen Perform “I Saw Her Standing There” Twice At MSG: Gothamist
Paul McCartney is playing eight shows in the NYC area as part of his “One on One” tour over the next two weeks. Last night, he performed the first of two nights at Madison Square Garden, and brought out a pair of Jersey legends to help out with the encore: watch below as McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and Little Steven perform the Beatles’ classic “I Saw Her Standing There.” It was so good, the band immediately played it a second time afterwards: “I reckon we gotta play it one more time,” McCartney said before they launched into it.”The last time we played together was in London’s Hyde Park and they pulled the plug,” McCartney told the crowd, referencing the July 2012 show at the Hard Rock Calling Festival where power to the stage was cut off because of Hyde Park’s noise curfew. We covered the “One on One” tour back in August when McCartney played at MetLife Stadium, but there is one point I want to make about the new tour: this is arguably the greatest setlist McCartney has ever put together. It was a 40 song set (!!) that had a perfect balance of jangly early Beatles classics (“Love Me Do,” “All My Loving,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “And I Love Her,” “A Hard Day’s Night”), rarely performed Beatles deep cuts (“You Won’t See Me,” “Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite,” “I’ve Got A Feeling”), a generous helping of his best post-Beatles album Band On The Run (“Jet,” “Let Me Roll It,” “Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five,” “Band On The Run”), one complete obscurity (“In Spite Of All The Danger,” the first song he wrote with the pre-Beatles group The Quarrymen), the best tracks from his most recent work (“New,” “Four Five Seconds,” “Queenie Eye”) and a whole lot of untouchable classics (“Lady Madonna,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Maybe I’m Amazed,” “Hey Jude,” “Helter Skelter,” the closing medley from Abbey Road). And nothing is better than the over-the-top fire extravaganza that is “Live and Let Die.”You can check out performances of “Mr. Kite” and “Love Me Do” below.McCartney will play MSG again on Sunday night, followed by two shows at Barclays Center and two at Nassau Coliseum next week.
