CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, like most organizations, has had a hard time getting its hands on Prince memorabilia over the years. But that changes this week when one of the legendary musician’s outfits takes its place in the museum. As part of its new Connor Theater immersive experience, the Rock Hall will display the actual outfit Prince wore while honoring George Harrison during the late Beatles guitarist’s induction in 2004.Prince hit the stage to perform “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Harrison’s son Dhani. Prince’s epic guitar solo is considered by many to be the single greatest performance in the history of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductions.”It’s a pretty big get,” says Karen Herman, vice president of curatorial affairs for the Rock Hall. “We worked directly with Paisley Park. They were very generous in lending it to us. It’s a very important piece in Prince’s legacy.”

Prince’s Hall of Fame performance has an interesting backstory. Harrison’s widow Olivia was skeptical, considering Prince didn’t have a relationship with her husband. However, producers for the ceremony assured her it would be special.

Petty, Lynne and Dhani Harrison also had no idea what Prince was going to do, given his tight schedule, which allowed for limited rehearsals. Thus, when the Purple One came into the spotlight, improvised a solo and threw his guitar into the air, the musicians on stage were just as stunned as anyone.

Prince’s outfit is the centerpiece in the exit corridor visitors will walk through after watching late director Jonathan Demme’s “Power of Rock” media show inside the Connor Theater, which opens to the public on Saturday.

Demme’s 12-minute film pieces together footage from Rock Hall Inductions of the past 30-plus years. The movie is paired with a media experience unlike anything the Rock Hall has presented before.

The exit hallway of the theater will also feature the suit Chuck Berry wore during the 1995 Concert for the Hall of Fame, as well as items from Metallica, Joan Jett, Bonnie Raitt, Talking Heads and other artists.

“All the artifacts in those cases are outfits or instruments that were on stage during a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony and are featured in the [“Power of Rock”] show,” reveals Herman. “We wanted things specifically related to the Inductions and we’ll change some of them out over time.”
