The Beach Boys and The Beatles helped to re-shape pop culture, dominating international charts during the 60s. The two groups had a friendly rivalry – each would listen to the other’s releases, wondering how they achieved those sounds. One song in particular saw Paul McCartney channel a slice of Brian Wilson’s California magic – yet it remains very subtle.One of the most storied chapters in the relationship between the two groups takes place immediately prior to the release of ‘Pet Sounds’. Now regarded as a seminal masterpiece of 20th century music, Beach Boys’ Bruce Johnston took an initiative copy to London on a short trip – and played it for John Lennon and Paul McCartney.“I was able to play the mono which sounded great and then we played it through, and then we played it again. And Lennon and McCartney… They were awesome, they were so polite and cool and loved the music; it was a great experience,” he recalled.The Liverpool duo left with their minds blown, and their horizons expanded – the impact of ‘Pet Sounds’ soon creeped into their work.
