Why should we respect and mourn a 90-year-old Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire?George Martin, who made his name as the producer, studio wizard, inspirer and challenger of The Beatles, died last week.Martin had the respect of two of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, and that should be enough for the rest of us. Martin’s interactions with John Lennon and Paul McCartney helped the monolith that was The Beatles design and direct the sounds of 1960s pop music. They took sound and style to previously unimaginable places, and did it often.
