I awakened this morning, fully aware of the historical significance of this day in music/world history. It was not surprising to me to see networks this morning marking this historic date, with stock footage from JFK. A true musical/cultural shift occurred 59 years ago today, as The Beatles landed at the newly renamed JFK Airport in NYC. It took only 43 days from the day I Want To Hold Your Hand was released here (12/26/63) until their arrival here ahead of their upcoming first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show two days later. In those 43 days, Beatlemania exploded mostly upon the youth of America. It was fairly rare when an artist had two songs on the charts at the same time (the exceptions were usually the first hit was going down the charts while a new hit was rising!). Well, this new British band with the seemingly strange name not just had two songs on top 40 radio at the same time, they completely turn the music world upside down here! By the time they arrived, they already had the top 2 songs, 2 more in the top 25 and 4 more ‘hot prospects’.
