George Harrison’s famous ‘ransom’ guitar to go on sale for £500,000 – Wales Online
A piece of Beatles history will go on sale today (Saturday) in Dallas, Texas, 40 years after it was traded for a stolen guitar. The rare 1958 Sunburst Les Paul electric guitar was taken in exchange for the return of George Harrison’s red Gibson Les Paul.
The Beatle’s beloved 1957 Les Paul ‘Lucy’ was stolen in 1973 during a break in at his LA home. The cherry red guitar was a gift from influential singer and guitarist Eric Clapton and had been used to write ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ in 1968.
Lucy was then sold to a store on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood who sold it on to a musician named Migual Ochoa, unaware of its famous link or history. The store later saw the guitar on a police bulletin which allowed Harrison to track down the buyer and contact him asking for his prized guitar back.
