Charlie Watts wasn’t a flashy drummer surrounded by a giant kit with a shiny gong. Never was he one to indulge in a 20-minute-long drum solo. But his restraint and perfect timing were the backbone of both the Rolling Stones, the longest-running rock band, and some of the greatest songs ever recorded.
As the drummer of the Rolling Stones, Watts, who died Tuesday, Aug. 24, at age 80, kept a steady beat for the band for nearly 60 years, a solid counterpoint to the antics of the Glimmer Twins — peacocking frontman Mick Jagger and the wild man ways of guitarist Keith Richards.
Although Watts’ demeanor was understated compared to his bandmates, his playing was exquisitely crafted, as much of the DNA of the band’s big hits as the big riffs of Richards’ rhythm guitar or the bluesy drawl of Jagger’s vocals.
