Michael Des Barres never made plans, but always knew what he was doing.

“No plans — instinct everything,” says the 73-year-old English-born actor and rock singer, who landed in Los Angeles in the ’70s and never left. “What I’m trying to say is that I’ve never thought anything through. I’ve just done it.”

Des Barres is talking ostensibly because a documentary on his life, “Michael Des Barres: Who Do You Want Me To Be?” arrives on home video this month.

“I leave school – this abusive, absurd, criminal institution – and now I’m on the streets of London,” Des Barres continues. “The streets of London in 1960-whatever it was, ’65 or ’66, were velvet and hashish and that whole setting. And I was fully involved in that.”

Des Barres would make his first splash in “To Sir With Love,” the 1967 Sydney Poitier film that co-starred singer Lulu, who sang the film’s title tune.

“I wanted to act. I knew what I wanted to do,” he says. “I saw James Dean and Monty Clift, and said, ‘Whoa, yeah, let me do that in the ’60s. Let me do a rock ‘n’ roll version of Montgomery Clift.’ I went to drama school. Within two weeks, I was in ‘To Sir With Love.’
