Sneak Peek: Peter Jackson’s new Beatles Documentary Get Back
Around this time last year, Beatles fans celebrated the 50th anniversary of their prolific rooftop concert, and Peter Jackson announced his new project: a documentary film that covers the making of the Beatles’ 1970 album Let It Be. The Beatles: Get Back (which was the working title for Let It Be) will stem from 55 hours of footage and 140 hours of audio transformed with modern production techniques, and will include the full 42-minute rooftop concert. Using material originally captured for director Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 Let It Be documentary that depicts the project as fraught with conflict, in contrast Jackson’s interpretation promises to show the friendship and love among The Beatles. The documentary has the approval and cooperation of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the widows of John Lennon (Yoko Ono) and George Harrison (Olivia Harrison).
According to McCartney, “I am really happy that Peter has delved into our archives to make a film that shows the truth about the Beatles recording together.” Ringo feels the same: “There was hours and hours of us just laughing and playing music, not at all like the Let It Be film that came out [in 1970]. There was a lot of joy and I think Peter will show that.”
