Why the Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’ has no drums for nearly a minute | MPR News
It’s been 50 years since the Beatles’ “Hey Jude” was number one on the Billboard pop chart. Paul McCartney originally wrote the song to comfort five-year-old Julian Lennon after his father left him and his mother to begin a relationship with Yoko Ono. It went on to become the Beatles’ biggest hit.
When the band began recording the take they eventually released, they didn’t notice that drummer Ringo Starr was in the bathroom.
That explains why the drums don’t start until fifty seconds into the song.
