The Mersey Beatles perform at the Palace Danbury – StamfordAdvocate
Lots of bands play homage to The Beatles, but there’s only one — The Mersey Beatles — whose members are all Liverpool lads who played the Cavern Club, just like the Fab Four. The Cavern Club, of course, is where the Beatles first made a name for themselves. It’s still rocking today (Lady Gaga has played there) and the Mersey Beatles was the club’s resident Beatles tribute band from 2002-12. Julia Baird, director of the storied Liverpool venue, has endorsed the Mersey Beatles, saying the group is the most authentic she’s heard. Her support is especially meaningful when you consider her connection to the Beatles: John Lennon was her brother. The Mersey Beatles have played all over the world and will rock the Palace Danbury on Friday, May 19. Steven Howard, who portrays Paul McCartney, spoke via email about what to expect when he and his mates (Mark Bloor as Lennon, David Howard as George Harrison, Brian Ambrose as Ringo Starr, and Tony Cook on keyboard) hit the stage.Q: How is your band like the Beatles?A: We were born in the same city and grew up in the same streets and later, we drank and played music in the same bars. We all fell in love with their music long before all that, though. We have certain quirks, which are like each member of the Beatles, but we don’t try to be like them in our daily lives, and even on stage we try to be as natural as possible. We are a “suits and boots” tribute, but not having to act or put on their Liverpool accent is one thing that sets us apart.
