Peter Asher, one half of the legendary singing duo Peter and Gordon, rode the first wave of the British Invasion to the top of the pop charts in the 1960s with the hit single “World Without Love,” but he didn’t stop there. Building on his success as a musician, he became a key figure in the 1960’s culture revolution and has forged a stellar career as a record producer and manager.Asher, a longtime Malibu resident, shared stories and songs from his long and successful career with an audience of Malibu residents at the Malibu Playhouse for the Malibu Cultural Arts Commission’s first Salon Series event of 2017.The audience was treated to a live performance of Asher’s multimedia show “A Musical Memoir of the 60s and Beyond.”“This began as a tiny salon thing, but I’m just off the road and brought the whole band with me,” Asher said. Asher described the performance as “a mixed bag of songs and stories,” but that bag contained many of his best known songs, including “Nobody I Know,” “A Hundred Miles,” “Lady Godiva,” and “World Without Love,” which was Peter and Gordon’s first hit, and was written by Asher’s friend, Paul McCartney.“My sister Jane was a well-known actress, and known to love music,” Asher recounted. “She was invited to see The Beatles when they first came to London.”
