Bob Dylan’s switch from acoustic folk to all-out electric rock ‘n’ roll is one of the defining creative evolutions of the 60s. Depicted in recent biopic A Complete Unknown, the move caused ferocious pushback – not least in the UK. The songwriter’s 1965 British tour has gone down in history, a transition point in culture. It’s a little known fact that Paul McCartney was there to see it first-hand.Yet the Beatle’s recollection might not be what it was. Discussing the show, the British legend told MOJO that it was “the infamous show where all the folkies thought he’d sold out. How crap is that? It was fantastic.”“First half is folky, and then the second half was electric with The Band – it was the all-time concert. But then of course, somebody starts going, He’s deserted the folk world! Yeah, no wonder, look at you mate,” he joked.Paul McCartney discussed his love of ‘Mr Tambourine Man’, and recalled Dylan performing it at the Royal Albert Hall: “So he did it there, the first time I’d ever heard it live. A really good song, very much of the period. Totally nailed that year. I was lucky to be there.”
