It’s hard to fathom how any of The Beatles’ albums could be “improved, ” especially from the mid-’60s onward, when they gave us such landmark albums as “Rubber Soul,” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” and “The White Album,” among others.However, there was a now-classic album by another of the leading ’60s bands, “Pet Sounds” by The Beach Boys, that made Paul McCartney reassess the direction The Beatles were going in, and the quality of their recordings.During an interview on the Booked on Rock Podcast, Gene Popa, author of The Colour of Your Dreams, looked back upon this aforementioned period and even offered a specific song that led to McCartney’s “musical second-guessing.”
