In 1966, The Beatles scheduled a tour of Germany, Japan, and the Philippines. It didn’t go super well. First, in Japan, they were scheduled to play Budokan, which is a popular music venue today, that has famously hosted artists like Ozzy Osbourne and Cheap Trick, but the Beatles show in 1966 was the first rock show to be booked at the venue. It was originally built for the inaugural Olympic judo competition during the 1964 Summer Olympics. While its primary purpose is to host martial arts contests, the arena is also home to the annual National Memorial Service for War Dead, which is held yearly on August 15, the day of Japan’s surrender in WWII.
