The year was 1966. John Lennon had just made his infamous “more popular than Jesus” comment. During an interview with The Evening Standard in England, John Lennon made the infamous “more popular than Jesus” statement. The full article quoted Lennon as saying, “Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn’t argue about that. I’m right and I will be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now. I don’t know which will go first – rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity.”
