After meeting his musical guru, Ravi Shankar, in 1966, George Harrison embarked on a spiritual quest. The legendary sitarist gave the Beatles religious books as well as valuable musical lessons. George soon found himself immersed in some of Hinduism’s most renowned texts. His musical compositions were influenced by his readings. He wrote songs like “Within You Without You,” which drew the attention of a scholar, Juan Mascaró, a Cambridge University Professor of Sanskrit. George was inspired to write “The Inner Light” by the Spanish translator.George Harrison was inspired to write “The Inner Light” by Professor Juan Mascaró.In his 1980 memoir, I Me Mine, George discussed what prompted him to write “The Inner Light.” It all came down to a passage from a book Mascaró had sent him.
