Liverpool’s world famous Mathew Street down the ages – Liverpool Echo
For such a small road, Mathew Street has certainly punched above its weight in terms of its cultural importance.
Famous the world over as the home of the Cavern Club, where The Beatles honed their craft before becoming international superstars, it is visited by millions of tourists every year and is on a par with the likes of La Rambla in Barcelona or Beale Street in Memphis.
But if its connection with the Fab Four wasn’t enough, many years later it gained a reputation as the home of a quite different musical phenomenon. This was thanks to Eric’s, the basement club which played host to every significant punk and new wave band of the late 1970s.

Here we take a look back at this vibrant street and the many different eras of music and fashion it has witnessed.
