Tommy LiPuma, producer who worked with Paul McCartney and many other stars, dies at 80 | Beatrice News Channel
Grammy-winning producer and veteran music executive Tommy LiPuma died on Monday in New York City after a short illness. He was 80.
LiPuma produced albums by a wide variety of well-known artists, including Paul McCartney‘s standards collection Kisses on the Bottom, which won a 2012 Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Among the many other music stars LiPuma worked with: George Benson, Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, Leon Russell, Diana Krall, Randy Newman, Dr. John and Willie Nelson.
Besides his work as a producer, LiPuma held important positions with many major record labels. During his long career, he was the first staff producer at A&M Records, co-founder of Blue Thumb Records, head of Warner Bros.’ Jazz and Progressive Music department, senior vice president of A&R at Elektra, president of GRP and Impulse, and chairman of Verve Music.
During his stints with GRP and Verve, Tommy enjoyed a long collaborative relationship with Krall that spanned 11 albums.
LiPuma is survived by his wife, Gill; daughters Jen Monti and Danielle Wiener; and four grandchildren. A public memorial is being planned.
