George Harrison’s Porsche And Rare Beatles Concert Footage To Be Sold In Auction
Over 200 lots of memorabilia is up for bids in Omega Auction’s “The Beatles Collection: Vinyl Records and Memorabilia”. A Porsche 928S, owned by George Harrison, a reel-to-reel tape of a 1964 radio interview and color film footage of The Beatles performing in Montreal in 1964 are among the lots.
The auction was announced March 10 and to be held March 17.
Harrison bought the Porsche on Aug. 10, 1980 and sold it on Feb. 1, 1984 with about 11,000 miles on the speedometer. The car, which has been owned by seven other people, comes with paperwork that includes the original service maintenance record, a copy of the original first registration document, various change of ownership documents and a Beatles book that references the car.
The Montreal 8mm color footage was filmed by the father of one of the opening acts when the Beatles played two shows at the Forum on Sept. 8, 1964. The film has about six minutes of the Beatles themselves and also shows a heavy police presence at the concert. The footage is to be sold with full copyright.
A reel-to-reel tape of a 1964 interview done by the group in Paris. It features all four Beatles, who are interviewed by Alistair McDougall in the 17-minute chat. According to the auction house, it was done for the British Forces Broadcasting Network, but Mark Lewisohn’s “The Complete Beatles Chronicle,” says the interview was recorded for the Armed Forces Network and broadcast on “Weekend World” to U.S. troops in Germany. The tape is believed to be the only copy in existence.
Other items on auction include lawn furniture owned by John Lennon from his Kenwood home, a record inner sleeve with doodlings by Lennon, a lot of four UK vinyl first pressings of albums “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Please Please Me,” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and “Beatles For Sale” and numerous assorted memorabilia that includes records and books.
The auction takes place March 17 at Penketh Business Park, Liverpool Rd, Great Sankey, Warrington, UK. Public viewing will be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 16 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 17. Internet bidding is available. The full catalog can be seen online.
