Unseen photographs of The Beatles, captured by photographer David Magnus, will be going on display at Proud Galleries this month.

‘The Beatles Unseen: Photographs by David Magnus’ exhibition gives a fascinating insight into The Beatles, captured by a photographer who bore witness to some of their greatest moments and watched their phenomenal ascent to the top of chart fame.

Magnus’ journey with The Beatles began in 1963 when he was asked to photograph a relatively unknown band during a concert at Stowe School. Thanks to his early work with the group, Magnus was given access other photographers could only dream of and as a result, he was able to capture, what we now consider to be, rare and unique images of the band’s rise to fame.

A pivotal moment in The Beatles’ career came 50 years ago, when, during a week in June 1967, they recorded their song ‘All you need is Love’ for the first time during a live broadcast for the BBC’s ‘Our World’, the World’s first live, international, satellite television production, reaching over 400 million people worldwide. Magnus was at the live recording and was able to document behind-the-scenes footage of the historical event, including photographs of the band relaxing backstage away from the recording studio.

Speaking of the intensity of the band’s influence during that time, Magnus said: “As I came from the EMI canteen, one of the female studio staff stopped me, put a hand on my shoulder and said to me, ‘I must touch you as you’ve been in the same room as The Beatles.’ It was as if I carried an aura from the Beatles. This to me sums up Beatlemania.”

‘The Beatles Unseen: Photographs by David Magnus’ exhibition will be on display at Proud Chelsea from 16 March- 14 May 2017. Full details are below.
