John Lennon’s draft letter to Queen Elizabeth II explaining why he returned his MBE is to go on display at The Beatles Story in Liverpool.The letter was recently valued at £60,000 during The Beatles Story’s ‘Memorabilia Day’ with Julien’s Auctions, where members of the public were invited to have their items appraised. The Memorabilia Day (26 October) coincided with the date that The Beatles first received their MBEs from the Queen in 1965 and today (25 November) marks the anniversary of the day that John Lennon returned his in an act of protest in 1969. It reads:“Your Majesty,I am returning this MBE as a protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and against Cold Turkey slipping down the charts.With love. John Lennon of Bag”
