When I Want To Hold Your Hand went to No.1 in the USA Cashbox chart – the band’s first No.1 in the States – The Beatles were doing a run of performances in Paris when they heard.They were in Paris for around 3 weeks after the news came in, returning to London on 5th February for just two days before arriving in New York on 7th February for their first US visit. It was a great feeling because we were booked to go to America directly after the Paris trip. (…) We’d been hired by Ed Sullivan, so if it had been a Number Two or Number Ten we’d have gone anyway, but it was nice to have a Number One. George
