When Paul McCartney says he’s going to get back, you better believe him.

Though “McCartney III” — the artist’s 18th solo record — was released in 2020, his North American tour in support of the album got under way only last month. Arriving at a moment that also finds Sir Paul promoting the remix album “McCartney III Imagined” and still reveling in the critical acclaim of Peter Jackson’s recent Beatles documentary, “Get Back,” the timing couldn’t have been better for him to return to Oakland on Friday, May 6, for his first show in the city in two decades.

Performing for a sold-out crowd at Oakland Arena, the ever-spry 79-year-old McCartney raced through a familiar and sizable set list of hits from throughout his unparalleled career. Marking the first of a two-night stint in town, with another concert for Sunday, May 8, it was an evening filled with high spirits, classic tunes and a few well-worn stories.
