The Queen’s New Year’s Honours have been announced and a number of Merseyside names have made the list – but one of Liverpool’s biggest stars once turned down his OBE.

Leading figures in medicine throughout the pandemic have been named in the 2021 Honours List, including Professor Chris Whitty.

Other notable figures include former Birkenhead MP Frank Field who has been made a companion of honour, joining the likes of Sir Elton John, JK Rowling and Sir Paul McCartney.

While many people dream of receiving an honour from The Queen, there have been a number of famous names over the years who have turned theirs down.

Among those to reject or return their honours were members of The Beatles.

All of the famous four were awarded an MBE in 1965.

They were nominated by the then Prime Minister Harold Wilson — but the nomination immediately sparked controversy as the honour was primarily bestowed to military veterans and civic leaders at the time.
