Ferry ‘Cross The Mersey
Liverpool Pier Head
The Mersey Ferry is a ferry service operating on the River Mersey in north west England, between Liverpool to the east and Birkenhead and Wallasey on the Wirral Peninsula to the west. Ferries have been used on this route since at least the 12th century, and continue to be popular for both locals and visitors.
It became known worldwide when Gerry Marsden recorded his song: “Ferry ‘Cross The Mersey”.
I used to ride The Royal Iris in my young days, between the Pier Head and Wallasey Ferry, where I would visit relatives.
One particular Ferry Boat (known as The Dazzle) was refurbished and glorified by the great artist Sir Peter Blake. Peter is also known for his famous Sgt. Pepper Album Cover.
You can find current information in that great publication: The Guide, Liverpool. It will keep you up-to-date with availability of visits to this and many other attractions on both sides of the River Mersey.
You can even have a nice cuppa tea at The Fab 4 Cafe in the terminus while you wait for the next Ferry.
