Ernst-Merck-Halle

St.Petersburger Str. 30, 20355 Hamburg, Germany

This was a 5,600 capacity indoor arena located in Hamburg, opened in 1950. It was named after a prominent German businessman and Politician Ernst Merck. It hosted concerts until June 1986 when it was closed and demolished. The Hamburg Messe complex now stands in its place.

A number of well known artists appeared there including, of course, The Beatles, who played there 26th June 1966, after a three year absence from the city.
The video of that performance is here  (book readers scan the code to see the video).

They played 2 sets, each of which was seen by 5,600 people. They didn’t get a break between the shows as they had to attend a press conference. Dozens of people were arrested for rioting during the shows, both inside and outside the venue.

Also appearing here over the years were The Rolling Stones, Kiss, Iron Maiden, Queen, Pink Floyd, The Who, Santana and Deep Purple.
