The Casbah was started by the Beatles’ first Drummer, Pete Best’s Mother, Mona Best, in the cellar of her 15 bedroom family home. Mona was born in India, as was Pete, and the story goes that she won some money on a horse race and invested in the house.

After seeing a TV show about the 2i’s Coffee Bar in London, she came up with the idea of making her basement into a place where Pete and his friends could get together and play music. In the early days, The Quarrymen, (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ken Brown) had their first booking there. Mona said that they must first help her paint the cellar, and they painted spiders, dragons, rainbows and stars.

Art student, Cynthia Powell, (not yet married to John Lennon) painted a silhouette of John on the wall which still can be seen today. It was a members only club, making it a tad exclusive.

In 2006, Culture Minister David Lammy pronounced it a Grade II building, listed by the British Heritage Society. The Casbah celebrated its 60th Anniversary in August 2019, and in 2020, became a bed and breakfast which is sure to be a favourite of the Beatles’ fans.
