ALBANY — In gunning down Beatles’ legend John Lennon in cold blood, murderer Mark David Chapman said he almost left one bullet to use on himself. But while he was able to kill Lennon as he returned to his Dakota building home across from Central Park with his wife, Yoko Ono, from a late night recording session on Dec. 8, 1980, Chapman during a recent parole hearing said he was too much of a coward to end it for himself. His description of the murder during an August 24 interview with a three-member parole panel was perhaps his most chilling to date. The transcript of the interview was released Friday morning. When asked why he emptied the gun into Lennon, Chapman responded, “to ensure his death.””I knew from the beginning to empty the gun,” he said. “It was my plan.”But he added that “I did have a thought of saving the last bullet and putting in it in my mouth. But no, not me. I’m too much of a coward to take my own life. I tried that, put it in my mouth, and I just couldn’t do it. But the plan was to kill him.”
