Paul McCartney says that by the time of John Lennon’s 1980 murder, the pair had healed their relationship. Following the Beatles’ 1970 split things were pretty brutal between the pair both privately — and especially in the rock press. In early 1972 they met at Lennon’s Greenwich Village apartment and called a cease-fire from bashing each other in public. In the mid-’70s the two songwriters became close again — and nearly recorded together in early 1975 in New Orleans. After Lennon reconciled with Yoko Ono that year, the friendship again turned icy with the late-’70s bringing almost no communication between the most beloved songwriters in history.
