When I first met Yoko Ono during the summer of 1969, she was the most hated woman in Britain. I knew no more than anyone else about this Japanese-American ‘performance artist’ who had caused John Lennon to leave his nice British wife and infant son and estranged him from his fellow Beatles, in particular his creative soulmate, Paul McCartney.Like the newspapers and his millions of fans, I couldn’t fathom what John saw in a woman seven years older and dressed in shapeless black, whose clouds of hair almost hid a face that seemed incapable of smiling.
