If John Lennon had said this to the Evening Standard journalist Maureen Cleave in 1966 instead of holding a mirror up to the diminishing masses huddled in religious ceremony across the Western world, it’s possible that he may have avoided the trigger finger of a crazed fanatic 14 years later. But he didn’t. Instead, he compared the Beatles’ astonishing popularity to that of Jesus Christ, or more to the point, to his followers.
