Incredible throwback photos of The Beatles hanging out backstage in Cambridge – Cambridgeshire Live
The Beatles are often regarded as the most influential band of all time. This made their visits to our part of the country all the more special.
In November last year, ‘The Beatles: Get Back’, a three-part series directed and produced by Peter Jackson, premiered on Disney+, providing a fascinating insight into the making of The Beatles’ 1970 album Let It Be. This got us thinking about the times that the legendary music group came to Cambridgeshire at the height of their fame.
Most of the photos that we uncovered came from the band’s visit to The Regal, Cambridge’s epic 1960s music venue, in November 1963.

This was The Beatles’ second and final appearance at The Regal; the group’s setlist contained 10 songs: ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, ‘From Me To You’, ‘All My Loving’, ‘You Really Got A Hold On Me’, ‘Roll Over Beethoven’, ‘Boys’, ‘Till There Was You’, ‘She Loves You’, ‘Money (That’s What I Want)’ and ‘Twist And Shout’.
The final two photos didn’t involve the whole group – this occasion was John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s first public gig at Cambridge University’s Lady Mitchell Hall. Ono was booked as part of a jazz performance and Lennon came along as “her band”; it was reported that Lennon sat with his back to the small audience for much of the 26-minute set.
