John Lennon memorial concert that saw crowds flock to the Pier Head in 1990 – Liverpool Echo
In May 1990, the 10-year anniversary of John Lennon’s murder was remembered with a massive concert in Liverpool.
The John Lennon Memorial Concert took place at the Pier Head, a decade after the former Beatle was shot by Mark Chapman in the archway of the building where lived in New York on Monday, December 8 1980.
Some of the biggest stars in music descended on the city to perform songs written by the music legend.
During the event, Lou Reed played “Jealous Guy”, Al Green “Power to the People”, Randy Travis with “Nowhere Man” and Terence Trent D’Arby sang a version of “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away”.
Other artists who performed included Kylie Minogue singing a disco version of ”Help”, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Cyndi Lauper, Joe Cocker and Wet Wet Wet all performed versions of Beatles and Lennon classics, as well as others.
The concert was hosted by Superman actor Christopher Reeve, who introduced the acts to a crowd of over 20,000 on the banks of the River Mersey.
The show was sanctioned by the former Beatle’s wife, Yoko Ono, to celebrate his life and music in what would have been his 50th birthday year.
Ono was involved in the planning of the event and was joined on stage by Sean Lennon, the son she had with the late star.
