The Beatles: On the band’s debut single, Ringo Starr was not allowed to play drums.

THE BEATLES released a slew of singles throughout the years, but their first song almost didn’t feature Ringo Starr because producer George Martin had someone else lined up to replace him.

On September 4, 1962, the Beatles recorded their first single, Love Me Do, with Pete Best, the band’s original drummer, performing the percussion instrument. Brian Epstein, the band’s manager, and Martin, the band’s producer, thought Best wasn’t up to the task and fired him. Ringo Starr was proposed as a replacement by George Harrison, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney, but Martin and Epstein had other ideas.
