This month, eco-conscious designer Stella McCartney released the All Together Now collection dedicated to The Beatles. The designer—who is the daughter of Beatles member Paul McCartney—created pieces inspired by the band’s animated film Yellow Submarine. Many pieces feature the art of German artist Heinz Edelmann, including a vegan faux fur coat made from a blend of acrylic, modacrylic, viscose, and cotton that depicts the iconic “Blue Meanies” character from the film on the back. “It affected me in a way I just wasn’t expecting,” McCartney said about Yellow Submarine, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. “Especially this idea of connecting people and bringing people together—politically this message has never been more relevant. So, I came out and I was like, ‘I have to do something.’” While some of the pieces from the new line are made without animal products, others—such as many of the sweaters and jackets—are made with wool and silk. In 2017, McCartney began exploring alternatives to these animal materials and partnered with Silicon Valley startup Bolt Threads with the aim of replacing silk with a vegan-friendly, yeast-based fabric in future clothing lines.
