Angie & Ruth head home to Liverpool

So, we flew German Wings twice in one day! It was very quiet on the flight from Vienna to Düsseldorf then we flew with a smaller Bombardier jet from Düsseldorf to Manchester, where we were picked up by family friend Pete Hodgson in his cab. He drove us the 40 minutes or so to the Fab-Themed Epic Apartments flat on Campbell Street across from the infamous open all night Chinese Restaurant The Mayflower on Duke Street. After midnight, the grumpy, elderly Chinese owner insists “you pay now, you eat later.”

The Filter and Fox little coffee house. wine bar & pub, is right out the front door of The Hideout Flat and has a deal with the apartments, so there are no coffee makers inside the flat. You you simply pop across the street to buy theirs. And make sure you sample their innovative, delicious small plates too.

Martin spent the next days filming stock footage of all the Mathew Street touristy stuff, cavern, tapes, etc.

Martin quenches his thirst in the “Beatles Booth” at The Grapes

Had really good luck with the weather it was sunny for just one day and that’s when I got all the shooting done. I did 8.5 miles on foot that day – thirsty work so thank heavens for Liverpool’s apparent “pub on every corner” policy!
After various visits to the Cavern Club and meeting up with Paul Jones from the Cavern Club Beatles, I met Ruth for Bangers and Mash in the same booth in The Grapes where the Beatles used to hang out and drink pints.
Had a really great time in Liverpool and Johnny Lennon was by my side the entire time.
Linda McCartney always used to say “look up”, so I did a few times and got all the shots I wanted. Big shout out also goes to fabulously funny cabbie Anthony Scotland during our stay, who’s a stand-up comedian in his own right.

The White Star Pub
I took a lot of footage there and when we came in the pub there was an Irish folk band playing in the back, and guess what they were playing when we sat down? Whiskey in the Jar – a nod to Jim McCartney and his favourite tipple! The White Star was Jimmy Mac’s favourite Wednesday afternoon hangout, and the place where he used buy Good Ol’ Freda Kelly a glass of sherry or two whilst educating her on the finer things in the world. What a coincidence. Maybe John told Jimmy we were in town.

Stay tuned for more on what we were researching in Liverpool in 2016!
