JFK is located in Queens, New York, 16 miles southeast of Midtown Manhattan.
Nowadays there is a fantastic recreation of the original TWA Terminal, where the Beatles landed, in the form of a hotel. They have 4 suites named for each Beatle.
The airport features 5 terminals and 4 runways. It opened in 1948 and was known as Idlewild Airport. Following John F. Kennedy’s assassination, was re-named JFK Airport in his honour.
There is a commemorative plaque at the site where The Beatles received a tumultuous welcome when their plane landed there on 7th February 1964. They had never experienced anything quite like it in their lives. But they would soon become accustomed to that kind of hysteria. No wonder it began to be known as Beatlemania.
Along with the multitudes of journalists, photographers and film crews, there was a massive Police presence to make sure that they remained safe until they reached their hotel, where they became actual prisoners in their own suite. They couldn’t even sleep at night, as the shrill screams of the fans outside continued around the clock.
I can only imagine what it must have been like for the Hotel staff on the front desk. Their security staff were kept fully occupied making sure that none of the girls managed to sneak in, either through the regular entrance, or via the delivery bays around the back of the building.
