Dolly Parton and Paul McCartney had dinner together Thursday night in Los Angeles, and when a cameraman for celebrity-news website TMZ caught Parton leaving the restaurant, the Sevier County native graciously answered a few questions.

“Hey! Do you think the world has enough love to survive?” the cameraman said to Parton as she left the Crossroads Kitchen in West Hollywood, to which Parton answered, “We need more love, that’s for sure.”

After confirming that she had dinner with the former Beatle, she added that it wasn’t her first time meeting him: “I know him from before.”

As she entered her waiting vehicle, the cameraman asked who paid for dinner, and she pointed to songwriter Linda Perry, who had accompanied Parton out of the restaurant, and said, “Linda Perry!”

TMZ commenters, a notoriously harsh group, took the TMZ cameraman to task for asking about who paid for dinner and not asking if Parton, McCartney and Perry might be collaborating on something besides a casual evening out.

“What did they talk about, that’s what matters!” said Jesse Marroquin. And a commenter who goes by the name “EnigmaWrapped’nSnark” said, “Who paid is such a stupid question … like who cares?” – a sentiment echoed by “captn,” who said, “What a stupid question to ask celebrities when they exit a dinning establishment.”

The Parton-McCartney-Perry dinner also generated speculation and positive remarks by other commenters:

“Wow, that is a lot of songwriting talent eating dinner together! I hope they are cooking up something good together, too,” said “Gru V,” and “Suzanne” said, “I would have paid six months rent to have dinner with Linda Perry, Paul McCartney and Dolly Parton. Yes, I have a life. But seriously, can you think of a better round table?”

The prolific Perry has written hits for singers including Christina Aguilera, Pink and Celine Dion.

Reports and video surfaced in February that Parton was working with Perry on a project that included singers Mavis Staples and Macy Gray.

Meanwhile, Parton has known McCartney for more than 40 years. They posed together at Nashville’s Opryland in 1974 in a photo that included McCartney’s late wife, Linda McCartney, and Parton’s late music partner, Porter Wagoner.

“I hope Paul McCartney sings with Dolly Parton an old folk rock song,” said TMZ commenter Carol Price.
